Maximising the Impact of Learning Walks with IP:

Pre-Walk Briefing: Before conducting a learning walk, ensure all participants are aligned on the purpose, focus areas, and specific goals. This initial briefing fosters transparency and allows staff to understand what will be observed, creating a collaborative rather than evaluative environment.
Use of Observation Protocols: Standardised observation protocols are essential for maintaining focus and fairness. The form has set responses and set questions. You can give users guidance with what you are looking for on the walk for each question.
Involve Students: Engaging students during learning walks adds a valuable perspective. Observers can ask students about their learning experience, gauging engagement and understanding. IP can help document and organise this feedback.
Follow-Up Debriefing: After the walk, a structured debriefing session allows staff to discuss insights, share positive practices, and address areas for improvement. With IP, the debrief can be documented and shared, ensuring that feedback reaches all relevant parties.
Incorporate Peer Observations: Encourage teachers to observe their peers as part of a collaborative learning environment. Automated Scheduling: IP allows you to set up and schedule monitoring activities, such as learning walks, in advance, simplifying the logistics for organisation leaders. With automated scheduling, you can assign specific dates, times, and observers, as well as send reminders to those involved. This feature ensures that learning walks and other monitoring activities are timely, regular, and seamlessly integrated into the organisation’s routine.
Areas for Development: You can add objectives immediately after the learning walk to the monitoring form that will then be added to the portfolio of staff members, but also notify the CPD Coordinator of the area for development to allow them to provide support and training to achieve these areas of development.
Alignment with whole organisation goals: Using IP for monitoring classroom practices ensures that individual learning walks align with the organisation’s broader goals. Connecting classroom observations to organisation-wide objectives creates a cohesive strategy for improvement. This alignment helps all staff members see how their efforts contribute to the overall mission of the organisation, fostering a sense of purpose and collaboration.
